Internet dating has really come of age in the UK over the last few years. Where once we relied on drunken encounters in pubs and clubs to meet partners, we can now make rational decisions based on profiles posted on dating sites. The largest UK online dating site boasts of having 3.5 million active members, which is a sizeable proportion of the UK population. This tells us that a huge number of UK based singles are trying online dating. This article looks at some of the reasons why this may be so.
When we were in our late teens/early twenties it was no problem to find a partner. All we had to do was go to the local nightclub, get drunk, and let nature take its course. As we get older however, this option becomes less and less attractive. We can’t make informed choices when we are drunk, and we are also seriously limiting our choices, when you think of the thousands of local members that a dating site can have.
Internet dating allows us to browse through as many profiles as we want coffee in hand, and make rational choices over who we want to contact. This makes internet dating far superior to the traditional UK method of meeting a partner.
In recent years the UK has become far more health conscious. The smoking ban in pubs, together with a raised awareness of obesity issues mean there are fewer people going to pubs than before, especially those in their late 20s and thirties. This means we need to find alternative methods of meeting a partner, and online dating can certainly provide that. We don’t have to go out drinking in order to meet someone, and with this alternative method we can now utilize our leisure time pursuing other interests.
Online dating has lost the social stigma that once applied to the traditional dating agencies or even the newspaper personal adverts. Most of us now, if we haven’t tried it ourselves, will know of someone who has had a go at internet dating. The increasing use has had a snowball effect in removing the social stigma from this method of meeting people.
If you are a UK based single and you haven’t tried online dating yet, you should make this the year when you give it a try. As you will have noted from the above points, there are several reasons why UK singles dating websites have really taken off.
