It is not making a revival like that made by the Welsh language. (some parts of Wales now have 80+% Welsh speakers) but is still surviving.
Like Welsh, there are Scots Gaelic programs on TV but I don't think they have their own channel unlike Wales and Ireland.
I thought it was mainly older people in the highlands that speak it but when I was up in Scotland last year I watched a TV soap in scots Gaelic in which many of the actors were young people. I hope you Scots don't give up on your own language and just go to speak the language of the Sassenach.
A country without a language is a country without a soul.
(Gwlad heb iaith,gwlad heb enaid.)
Well they are teaching Irish Gaelic in the Schools in Ireland again so it doesn't die, so I would imagine they are doing the same in Scotland
Who needs to understand it?
Real men can wear skirts and get away with it!
– LOL – I’m Scottish by heritage.
Seriously, one nice thing about the internet is it allows the family language groups to maintain contact and heritage. Where just one generation ago, languages were disappearing they now may be on the rise. A website can keep the knowledge and vocabulary of a language alive even if my own father did not live long enough to teach me.
I hope not, just like my language (Welsh) is not being used enough.
Keep speaking your natural Language, keep it alive!!!!
what's that?
Sadly, yes. Very few speak it now.
I thought it was growing well again – in highlands and islands.
Yes sadly it is and before it disappears may i wish all you Gaelic speakers a BLAIDHNA MHATH UR [spelling] that's happy new year to the rest of you
aye
try finding us pecht moothers and compare it
It still exists in the Highlands and Islands, but it's getting rarer, BBC still puts on programmes in Scottish Gaelic though so it must have a heartbeat yet. I know a guy that's studying it in college, he's the only non geriatric class member.
I certainly hope so
