He Likes A Complete Band But You Desire A DJ – What Do You Do?

Maybe It's Time To Look For Somebody Else?

What do you do if the bride wants a band but the groom wants a disc jockey? Well, if the band is outrageously expensive and you’re on a tight budget, then your answer is obvious. But what if they are pretty close in price? What do you do then? Let’s take a few moments here and compare one with the other. Putting the cost aside, what are the pros and cons of a band and a DJ? If you’re going to try to save money, look for cheap wedding favors. Don’t cut costs on your music.

Having the perfect music at your wedding is essential to the wedding’s success, second only to the food. Music creates a mood. Music also can allow the guests to have fun and really enjoy themselves. So be careful when choosing either a band or DJ. Unless you and your family and friends like only one specific kind of music, you’re probably going to want to include many genres of music to accommodate all ages ranges and tastes of your guests, as well as yourselves.

So, what are the pros of having a band? Well, obviously, the fact that it’s live music is a huge factor as well as the sound quality. A live band brings energy into the room which a DJ finds hard to compete with. Also, you can have a theme band, whether it be Motown music, a swing band, or even Celtic. The options are limitless as the options are limitless when you are looking for unique wedding favors.

Well, if a live band is so amazing, why even consider a DJ? First of all, a live band can be cost prohibitive. Many times you are paying per band member and the larger the band the more money you will spend. Also, some wedding bands play only one sound. So if you’re looking for a wide variety of music, you’ll need to be very choosy about the band you pick and it will probably be more expensive. And, if your reception is small, you may want to pass on a full band. And even if you have a DJ for your wedding shower along with bridal shower favors, you still can have a band for your wedding.

What about a DJ? There are some wonderful reasons to hire one. Your first song can be sung and sound exactly like the artist who initially recorded it. Also, most DJ’s have thousands of songs and from every genre available. This means that your great Aunt can hear music she enjoys as well as your punk rocker teen brother. This allows for a great variety of music. Lastly, normally there isn’t any breaks in the music at all.

Sounds great, right? But what about the cons to having a DJ? The biggest problem is hiring a DJ who is bored with his job. He plays for your wedding what he’s played for the last hundred and hates what he’s doing. Also, they can change what you asked him to play at the last minute. Except for the first song, how are you going to remember? And who else will ever know. And, if he isn’t a dynamic personality, what’s the announcement of the wedding party going to be like? A bad DJ can totally ruin your wedding.

So what do you do? Anyone that is hiring either a band or DJ needs to do their homework. The best way to make a decision is to hire one that you’ve heard at someone else’s wedding. Then you know what you’re getting. Also, you need to go to band and/or DJ showcases. Only then will you have the knowledge to make this very important decision. And obviously, if you can afford it, having both is the absolute best. The band plays and the DJ is used during the breaks and for special songs that the band cannot play.
